(plural of genus) Noun:
- A grouping of organisms having common characteristics distinct from those of other such groupings.
- (in philosophical and general use) A class of things that have common characteristics and that can be divided into subordinate kinds.
Genera, is thus, a reference to groups with similar characteristics: humans from Earth, and trolls from Alternia. Homo sapiens sapiens (humans) are a branch of the homo genus. Trolls, similar in nature to humans, are of the species “sapiens sapiens” but of a different genus.
Canonically, Dirk describes the the Condesce’s efforts to change “homo” to “hospes” (in other words, to “alienus”: a different genus entirely). Or, in layman’s terms, change humans into trolls. Our concept for this AU is similar to what Dirk depicts. This AU, however, does not result in the same tragedy— this is a different world, where the children we know did not come to play the SBurb/SGrub.
Instead, these kids grew up in a world years after a truce was established between the Alternians and Humans. The Condesce’s unending frustration with our disgusting reproductive systems, coupled with a strong rebellion on Earth caused her to accede. Nonetheless, many lives had perished in the conflict leading to a severe decline in the human population. This left the Condesce with the opportunity to send tens of thousands of trolls as a “peace offering” in order to compensate the humans’ lost labour force. Over the next several hundred years, former Alternian citizens faced enslavement and oppression from the human population; it was only with the Alternian Liberation Movement, supported by both humans and trolls, that their situation began to change and healing began to occur. Troll culture slowly but surely permeated into our own, their practices and language intermixing with ours. Equality seemed to be an attainable goal; discrimination was no longer overt, having slowly been pushed into the background.
But not all is the same in this future world of ours. While many issues and prejudices of the past have been dealt with, some have not. Younger generations have been struggling with one question in this world of clashing cultures: “who AM I?”
This question reaches a boiling point when a few individuals realise that more than anything, they would feel more comfortable in their bodies if they could only be what they are not…
To switch from human to troll…
Or from troll, to human…
